From Engineer to Leader: Finding Your Path (Panel Discussion)

There are many ways to lead, and your leadership journey is your own. Following our VP of Engineering Jack Humphrey’s talk, senior leaders at Indeed joined him for a panel discussion. They talked about how they got to where they are in their career, what challenges they’ve encountered, and how they’ve developed their own leadership styles.

Speakers
Jack Humphrey is a VP of engineering at Indeed, where he looks after teams that provide crucial capabilities to Indeed’s many product development teams. This talk was inspired by a colleague’s request for a management book recommendation. In lieu of a recommendation, Jack jotted off a 223-word response on his own guiding principles. Turns out he has opinions on the topic.
Julie Scully started at Indeed in 2009 as a software engineer and currently is the director of engineering for our SMB business area. She leads an organization in Austin, Seattle, and Tokyo to deliver a simple, effective, end-to-end hiring solution for employers.
RC Johnson has been managing software engineering teams for 10+ years. As a manager at Bazaarvoice, he was able to bootstrap the NYC office from nothing to 60+ people. Then, as director of engineering at WP Engine, he helped grow the team from 15 to 50+. Today, RC is director of engineering for the Indeed Incubator, our program that innovates on new products for Indeed. RC also enjoys coffee and a good book, watching baseball or a movie, and spending time with his wife and four kids.
Jeff Davis is an engineering director at Indeed. He spent his early years as a programmer, and for the last 12 years he’s managed teams of engineers. In the past two years he's been building a Site Reliability Engineering organization for Indeed. He still looks for opportunities to write code, but they seem to be getting fewer and further between. He should probably fix that.
David Tulig started at Indeed in 2009 as a software engineer and currently is a director of engineering leading the Profiles and Applications group. This group helps job seekers build their resume and profile and easily apply to jobs on Indeed. He leads an organization across Seattle, Tokyo, Hyderabad, San Francisco, and Austin.
